My birth name is Robert Mendoza, but those that know me refer to me as Rocky Rob. I was born on September 9th, 1988, in Weslaco, TX. My memories as a kid are fuzzy and I don’t remember much, but I do remember being raised by my grandparents. Beyond that, I’ve lived in Michigan most my life. I have lived in other places, but Michigan always seems to bring me back to home.
Music wise, I have always been mesmerized by every aspect of it. I always found it amazing, interesting, and inspiring to see art being created in real time. I was always curious to see how a song was built and so I started the process myself. Making something from nothing is essentially magic. I was inspired by mostly Mexican music as that’s what my grandparents listened to the most. I grew up on bands like Los Bukis Ramon and Ayala Pedro Infante. I also listened rap genre and my biggest influences were The Notorious B.I.G, Fat Joe, Big Pun, Rasheed, Eminem, and ICP. I combined my love of both styles of music to create the music I make today.
I felt deep inside myself to start music and had the thought process of if these artists can create this magic, then I could do the same. Most people think that being envious is bad, but it’s not. It’s a natural emotion, and I used that emotion to push myself harder and beyond what my peers were doing. I had to learn everything myself and didn’t have any help as being self-sufficient is always the way to go. I had to stop momentarily after my baby momma passed away, as my family was broken, but I kept pushing on and never gave up. Over time, many artists have given me advice from Fat Joe to B-Real of Cypress Hill. They taught me to never give up, always remain positive, and that my dreams were achievable if I just believed in myself.
I have opened for several notable acts, like King Gordy, Esham, and Awesome Dre. I’ve also recorded tracks with King Gordy, Kung Fu Vampire, Tre lbs, and Danny dollars. I have this certain unstoppable momentum and like a freight train I will keep moving on and pushing and will not be easily stopped. I will continue on the grind and plan on continuing making videos with Bob Rox of Roxx TV and I plan on making more music in the future that everyone can enjoy and relate to. Rocky Rob will hopefully become a notorious name in the underground because I know that I work harder and push harder than most even think about.
